University Café (lunch from £7, no corkage fee)
Open since 1918, the art deco interior is museum-like, with vintage cappuccino signs, red vinyl flip seats, Formica tables and jars of sweeties such as barley sugars and pear drops for sale in quarters. The menu has an array of comfortable favourites but for dessert, a fruit ice made with the award-winning ice-cream will transport you right back to childhood. More info
