An outstanding collection of contemporary art recently acquired by the National Galleries of Scotland and the Tate, through a generous donation by British collector and dealer, Anthony d'Offay. Individual rooms devoted to a particular artist will be on display all over the UK. In the opening displays in Edinburgh, works by Andy Warhol, Vija Celmins, Ellen Gallagher, Damien Hirst, Alex Katz and Francesca Woodman can be viewed.

Designed to be one of the largest clan gatherings in history, the clan members will be on show in a parade up the Royal Mile to a pageant at Edinburgh Castle esplanade. The games will incorporate the Deuchars World Highland Games Heavy Events Championship, a Clan Village, Scottish piping, Scottish produce and a genealogy area.

Scotland's world-class national ballet company celebrates its 40th anniversary this year with a triple bill of contemporary works of choreography, set to the music of composers from Luciano Berio to Johann Sebastian Bach. The programme includes George Balanchine's 'Rubies', which was inspired by jewellery design, and Krzysztof Pastor's 'In Light and Shadow', which mixes the spirit and music of the Baroque period with the most contemporary of shapes.
